Having a partner with ASD can feel like a roller-coaster ride for the neurotypical spouse - riding high one moment on the spouse's charming quirkiness, only soon to spiral downward, exhausted and discouraged, sometimes by the very same traits, which have suddenly taken new forms of expression. In this charming and well-written book, the author combines information on autism spectrum disorder and her vast knowledge of literature, pop music, and philosophy with accounts of daily life on a large dairy farm with three sons and a husband with an ASD. This books provides guidelines for a successful marriage between an NT and an Aspy, and in sharing the ups and the downs in their particular journey, the author hopes that others on a similar path may find humor, recognition, and ways to view the unique life of loving an individual with ASD from a new angle. Not Your Neurotypical Guy: Loving a Spouse with Autism will also appeal to those curious about ASD and how it affects someone's life and love. Any reader in a long-term relationship will resonate to the challenges and joys of living in such close relationship with another. (Previously published as Loving the Tasmanian Devil).

About the Author:
Maureen McCarthy Bartlett is a dairy farmer and high school teacher and has been married to a man with Asperger Syndrome for the past twenty-one years. She lives with her husband, three sons, one dog, one chinchilla, four geese, twenty-four cats, and 300+ cows on a farm in Central New York. Maureen grew up in Lockport, New York, and is a graduate of Amherst College and SUNY Cortland. A teacher for almost twenty years, she teaches a class/shadowing program for high school seniors interested in agriculture or environmental science careers and also teaches college writing for classes of seniors heading toward health, law, education, and business careers. She loves working with teenagers the quirkier the better.
Review:
A delightfully touching, glass-WAY-more-than-half-full account of a true partnership. Maureen McCarthy Bartlett generously allows us to experience her grace and insight as she relates the gifts and challenges of two people working to define their relationship under the umbrella of Asperger Syndrome. Pepper with vivid literary references and timely scientific findings, NOT YOU NEUROTYPICAL GUY is both an intensely personal and a globally recognizable narrative of everyday life and love. Her genuine admiration shines throughout the pages as she respectfully brings their story to life. Ms. McCarthy Bartlett is a wonderful role model and voice for the autism community. Can't wait to hear more from her in the future! --Sherry A. Moyer, LSW, executive/research director, The University of Toledo Center for Excellence in Autism

This book will fascinate and comfort anyone with Asperger's and simultaneously provide support to their families, friends, and colleagues. With an engaging combination of insight and practicality, Bartlett meshes research and observations, such as her husband's amazing ability to impersonate grass and sense how an animal feels, with practical tips such as how to weather his storms of anxiety. Kudos to the author on a loving look at a loved one's hitherto unfathomable way of seeing and being in the world. --Kitty Axelson-Berry, publisher, founder, Association of Personal Historians

Thank you, Maureen Bartlett, for your highly engaging and insightful book about marriage to an 'Aspie' as well as the impact of Asperger Syndrome on parenting. Your ability to provide a glimpse into the thinking of individuals with AS makes your book a valuable resource for anyone truly interested in understanding people with AS. --Diane Adreon, EdD, associate director, University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism & Related Disabilities
