From the Author:
This book attempts to present a sensibility all-too-rarely found in the blockbuster-driven "cultural industries" of film, television and mass-market fiction. These poems try to address the way individuals face the limits of their own capabilities and the larger limits of historical circumstance; they also look for an awareness of imperfection and injustice that does not turn to bitterness, fanaticism or fatalism. Settling for Beauty will never be a major motion picture, but I hope it will be read by individuals who seek to enhance their engagement with the world around them.
About the Author:
J.D. Smith has published two collections of poetry, Settling for Beauty (Cherry Grove Collections, 2005) and The Hypothetical Landscape (Quarterly Review of Literature Poetry Series, 1999). He also edited the anthology Northern Music: Poems About and Inspired by Glenn Gould (John Gordon Burke, Publisher, 2001). Smith's first children's book, The Best Mariachi in the World, was published in bilingual, Spanish and English editions in 2008, and his first essay collection, Dowsing and Science, is forthcoming from Texas Review Press. Smith's one-act play "Dig," optioned for film, was produced at London's Old Red Lion Theatre in 2010.

J.D. Smith lives with his wife Paula Van Lare and rescue dog Roo in Washington, DC, where he is circulating two poetry collections and working on projects in several genres.
