Soon after arriving in Arizona in 1975, Gregory McNamee walked the length of the Santa Catalina Mountains outside of Tucson in preparation for more than 30 hikes from the rims of the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River. Subsequently, he explored every region of the state, in particular its national parks and monuments, a feat that makes him just the right guide for this voyage throughout the Grand Canyon Stat's contributions to our national natural treasury. McNamee writes frequently for Arizona Highways and speaks on topics in Arizona history, literature, and culture for the Arizona Humanities Council. He is also a contributing editor to Encyclopaedia Britannica, writing on world geography and for its Web log, on every topic under the sun. He is the author of 26 books, including Gila: The life and Death of an American River; Blue Mountains Far Away: Journeys Into the American Wilderness, and Moveable Feasts: The History, Science, and Lore of Food.
