The world is always changing, but the rate of those changes has accelerated dramatically since the middle of the twentieth century. That change is seen in technology communications, the family, entertainment, and possibly the most significant of all, the workplace. Prior to World War II, the workplace was male-dominated. With few exceptions, males ran the companies.
With the labor shortage that came about during World War II, women filled many positions formerly held by males. This change was considered temporary and necessary brought on by the unique situations created by the war.
The number of women in the workplace increased dramatically over the next five decades. Women began to demand equal pay for equal work. They rightfully expected equal opportunities based on the results of their work, not their gender. Radios blared with the lyrics from Helen Reddy's song, "I am Woman, Hear Me Roar." That roar continues to grow louder.
The 1964 Civil Rights Act made discrimination against women in education or employment illegal. However, the passage of equal opportunity legislation did not ensure equal treatment. Consider the following.
During the five decades from 1950-2000, the number of women in the workforce steadily increased. In 2006, women accounted for over 50 percent of the total U.S. labor force, up from 29.6 percent in 1950.
Since 2000, the number of women in executive management positions has grown less than 1 percent annually; women make up less than 15 percent of executives in corporations....
