In 1942, as Germany's military fortunes began to wane, an angry Hitler, frustrated with his generals, ordered a transcript made of his regular military conferences so that there would be no confusion as to his orders. Despite the widespread destruction of many of the documents in 1945, some of the transcripts survived, portions of which have been published over the past 50 years. Containing all of the extant material, these volumes challenge both the postwar memoirs of the generals, who often describe Hitler as the chief impediment to military success, and Hitler's apologists, who blame conservative generals for the Wehrmacht's failures.
