Fiction. Translated from the Swedish by Laura A. Wideburg. "In the disturbing second tale of revenge to feature tormented and twisted Justine Dalvik from Swedish author Frimansson (after GOOD NIGHT, MY DARLING), Justine is still battling demons, both real and imagined, while living in her family home in Haesselby. The tall, forbidding manse was the last place married, mother-of-two Berit Assarson was seen alive. Seven years have passed since Berit's disappearance, and her husband, Tor, and her best friend, Jill Kylen, are trying to move on with their lives. Both harbor lingering, foggy suspicions about Justine, just like young Micke, whose father, Nathan, vanished while traveling with Justine. In spare prose, Frimansson skillfully weaves themes of darkness and light, guilt and innocence, life and death. Not for the faint of heart, this bleak mystery will linger in readers' minds long after the last page is turned"--Publishers Weekly.

Review:
In the disturbing second tale of revenge to feature tormented and twisted Justine Dalvik from Swedish author Frimansson (after Good Night My Darling), Justine is still battling demons, both real and imagined, while living in her family home in Hässelby. The tall, forbidding manse was the last place married, mother-of-two Berit Assarson was seen alive. Seven years have passed since Berit s disappearance, and her husband, Tor, and her best friend, Jill Kylén, are trying to move on with their lives. Both harbor lingering, foggy suspicions about Justine, just like young Micke, whose father, Nathan, vanished while traveling with Justine. In spare prose, Frimansson skillfully weaves themes of darkness and light, guilt and innocence, life and death. Not for the faint of heart, this bleak mystery will linger in readers minds long after the last page is turned. --Publisher's Weekly, 3/08

The long-awaited sequel to Good Night, My Darling (1998) returns to the story of tormented Justine and her bird. Six years have passed since Justine dispatched the people who caused her the most misery, and now she is being haunted by the deaths. The police are sniffing around again, as well as the relatives of one of the women, the same woman Justine is convinced she can see just under the surface of the lake. This enthralling and disturbing tale selected the Best Swedish Crime Novel of 2005 tells the story of how Justine deals with being a murderer and the consequences of her actions upon the olives of others. Told from multiple viewpoints that range from a deranged teenager to an abused wife, the novel will appeal most to those who have already read Good Night, My Darling, though enough back-story is included for those new to the story to find their bearings. Essential for collections with Frimansson s earlier work, and recommended for all libraries with demand for international thrillers. --Jessica Moyer, Booklist, 5/1/08

So many lives are entangled in this novel of suspense and I could not stop reading until I found out how the characters reached a conclusion to their various problems. Jill Kylen has lost her childhood friend Berit Assarson. Berit left home one day and did not return. Berit s husband Tor seems unable to accept that Berit is gone and cannot even make himself return to work. Jill cannot seem to get over the loss either. She is spending a lot of time with Tor to try to bring him back to the land of the living. Justine Dalvik is a person whose family owned Sandy Concern, a large candy company, and she has a large inheritance, which enables her to live as she pleases. Justine tried to be friends with Berit and Jill when they were young but the two girls treated Justine very cruelly. Justine was the last person known to see Berit. Berit had been dwelling on the cruelties the girls inflicted on Justine. Although Justine was questioned by the police and by Tor, she states that Berit visited and left with no indication as to where she intended to go next. Micke is a young man who is having a difficult time finding a place for himself in the world. He is the son of Nathan and Nettan. Nathan left Micke s mother years ago. The last time Micke saw Nathan he was preparing to leave for a trip to Africa. Micke never saw his father again and has been haunted by the fact that someone must know something of what happened to his father. Nathan had promised he would return and the two of them would start a business of taking groups on trips. Justine had traveled to Africa with Nathan, her lover, but Nathan never returned from the trip. Justine states that he was lost in the jungle and although many search parties had been sent out, he was never found. A young woman that was also on this trip was killed in a hotel on the way home. Justine had been in the bathroom showering and found the victim when she came out of the bathroom. The young woman was killed with Justine s knife but Justine swore a robber that had broken into the room did it. Hans Peter is Justine s new friend. Hans works at a hotel that also employs Ariadne Jaglander. Ariadne is a house cleaner in the hotel. Ariadne is married to Tommy Jaglander who is a police officer. Tommy visits the hotel one evening after Ariadne has gone home. He tells Hans Peter that he suspects Justine in the death of Berit and that he intends to reopen the cold case and have the lake drug to look for a body. All roads seem to lead to Justine however one will have to read the book to find out if she is guilty of anything. The Shadow In The Water is an exciting book, full of suspense and wonderful characters. The Shadow In the Water can be read as a sequel to Good Night My Darling but is also a wonderful stand-alone. I have not read Good Night My Darling but I do intend to do so. --Patricia Reed, Bestsellersworld.com
