One hundred years ago, liberalism was modernized to tackle the challenges of the time. Today, liberalism must again be renewed to ensure that freedom is protected for future generations. For a society to be maintained and evolve, Kalkman suggests that the notion of a common humanity extending to all people on this planet needs to be embraced.

About the Author:
Matthew Kalkman has an LL.B. from Durham and an MSc. from the London School of Economics. He represented the LSE at the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. His writings have been published in the Cambridge Student Law Review and the Inter Alia Law Journal. After Studying French at ULaval, he is presently working in environmental law in Vancouver.
Review:
Liberalism brings together the free market on the one hand and free society, civil liberties, human rights, the rule of law, and democracy on the other. They are different sides of the same coin and cannot be separated. New Liberalism builds upon this idea. It is a must read --Hans van Baalen, MEP President of Liberal International

I was particularly struck by his strong case for liberals to take on the cause of freedom for future generations, what he calls a "timeless" concept of freedom . . . This is certainly a book to be read by those who are still motivated by a liberal sensibility and want to engage in the renewal of liberal policy and practice in a global environment. --Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, Ph.D., Former Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Past-Director of the Liu Centre for the Study of Global Issues, President of the University of Winnipeg

Broad in scope, this clearly-written short book offers a strong defense of the need for a more defined and updated concept of "positive freedom" and describes an intriguing framework for the role of the state in supporting rights and responsibilities that, crucially, extend to future generations. --Dr. Anne M. Pearson, Professor at McMaster University
