Once Scratch has stowed away on the Silk’n’Spice, a sailing ship bound for the South Seas, he discovers that life on the ocean waves is harder than he thought. Scratch quickly learns he must earn his keep to avoid being thrown overboard, and he thinks the best way to do this is to befriend the ship’s cook, Pegleg. The only problem is that Pegleg doesn’t seem to like Scratch very much! So how will Scratch and Pegleg fare when they are set adrift in a lifeboat to await capture by pirates?

When a kitten named Scratch disobeys his mother and climbs aboard a sailing ship, he immediately finds an enemy in the ship’s bad-tempered cook, Peg-leg. Desperate for food, Scratch tries to win the cook’s affection by leaving dead mice on his bunk, but the kitten makes headway only after putting mice in the sailors’ stew. When the captain discovers a mouse in his food, though, both Peg-leg and Scratch find themselves set adrift in a lifeboat. Scruffy, energetic line drawings with gray washes capture the spirit of the writing. A glossary of sailing terms is appended. Green creates a sympathetic character in this independent kitten and an entertaining tale of his misguided attempts to win over the cook.
