Spain has more land under vine than any other country in Europe, and over the past thirty years has transformed its wine industry into one of the greatest in the world. Using a unique combination of native and imported grape varieties, Spain now produces a wide range of quality wines. Yet its wine regions and villages, many of which are located in unspoiled and remote areas, remain relatively unknown. The authors introduce the wine-loving traveler to these regions, providing a background to their wines and leading bodegas, or wineries.

About the Author:
Harold Heckle is a journalist and author. He works as a correspondent with an international press agency and contributes a wine column to the Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo. A long-term admirer of Spanish culture and an inveterate traveler, he is based in Madrid and has visited virtually all Spain's wine regions, on the mainland and in the Balearics and Canary Islands.
Desmond Begg was a leading expert on the wines and spirits of Spain and Latin America. He studied Spanish and Modern History at the Universities of Oxford and Granada and contributed to numerous international wine magazines.
Review:
"...astonishing amount of practical advice" --Decanter Magazine

"Offers invaluable information.... clear, colorful maps, driving times from major citiies, descriptions of the regions and their wines, short and lengthy itineries and times and places for local wine festivals." --Frank Prial, Wine Talk, The New York Times

Not just oenophiles will appreciate these handsome, basic guides for two of the world s major wine producers: California and Spain. Just over pocket-sized, hefty, with quality paper, both books (from Interlink s Traveller s Wine Guides series) display nearly identical formats. They offer an abundance of color photographs, illustrations, and maps that add to the attractiveness of their destinations. While the authors eschew public transportation in favor of the private auto for wine touring, their maps lack sufficient detail for point-to-point driving. Whether promoting a winery in California or a bodega in Spain, travel writer Holmes (Frommer s 25 Great Drives in California) and wine writer Heckle, who updated the text of the late Desmond Begg (The Vodka Companion: A Connoisseur s Guide), infuse their information with first-person knowledge and enthusiasm. Each wine-producing region covered includes additional listings for dining, sightseeing, special attractions, accommodations, and wine-related events. Holmes covers California wine regions from the wildly popular Napa-Sonoma area to the little-known Central Valley towns of Lodi, Clarksburg, and Madera. In Spain, Heckle shares the historical delights of Andalusia s Sherry Triangle and Aragon s famous vineyards of Rioja within the nine regions he explores.
Verdict Wine tasting at the source has become a major attraction for many travelers, and both books provide an excellent series of itineraries for trip planners looking for a themed tour. --Library Journal
