In this sailing mystery, Edward Casement heads for the Southern Ocean with Judy Whitlock, a salty hitchhiker, aboard his 45-foot yacht NOMAD crewed by Pablo, a young man from Uruguay. In the Falklands, Edward, a ladies man, gets in trouble with an official's wife. After Judy is called away and Pablo is deported as a spy, Edward finds himself with no crew, a mast to refit and a reputation as a pariah. Edward gets into even deeper trouble but avoids deportation by transporting public health nurse Heather Cooper and her Marine escort to outposts to work with the sick. When the Marine develops a bleeding ulcer requiring hospitalization, Edward and Heather, who have built a facade of mutual dislike, must travel alone. . . . The novel becomes a page turner.
