5.0 out of 5 stars A rare gem, 25 Aug 2008 By W.Rhodes - See all my reviews This review is from: Alfred and the Pirates (Hardcover) This is one of those rare books which has appeal for all ages. Ostensibly a children's book, with the story based around a boy and his dreams about pirates, sharply observed nuances and social commentaries lift the narrative and make it enjoyable for older readers. Irving Finkel's take on the fairly standard theme is quirky and original, while within the constraints of an uncomplicated story, the characters are particularly well developed. The elegant, homespun illustrations make reading the book an enjoyable experience, one which should not be passed-up on.
