There is rapid growth in Gaelic medium education in Scotland, particularly in the primary school sector. The contributors to this contemporary survey provide the background to this development by placing Gaelic medium education, GME, in its historical context and also by giving a comparative assessment with other language education practice in Wales and the Basque country. The book gives an up-to-date account of how Scottish schools and local authorities manage GME with practitioners outlining the variety of methodological, financial and practical issues which confront them both in rural and in urban areas. It addresses openly the linguistic, educational and political challenges which face Gaelic medium education and places these in the wider linguistic and political climate of Scotland today.

About the Author:
Margaret Nicolson is Senior Lecturer and Staff Tutor in Languages at the Open University in Scotland and writes on language issues in the Scottish context. Matthew MacIver is Chief Executive of the General Teaching Council for Scotland and writes on issues linked to education and to Gaelic.
