This book is based on a major exhibition of Stephen Hutchingss monumental landscape paintings organized by the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta. The paintings and the two videos included in the exhibition examine ideas of temporality, permanence and eternity. The book is illustrated with the paintings from the Landscapes for the End of Time exhibition as well as with many other examples of Hutchingss work. The accompanying essays provide insight and context, and offer an understanding and appreciation for his art as a whole. Also included is a discussion of the innovative techniques and methods he employs in his creative process and the significant role that contemporary music plays in the development of his work. Each publication includes a DVD containing both video works from the exhibition.

About the Author:

Petra Halkes is an independent art writer, curator, teacher and artist who lives in Ottawa. Her book, Aspiring to the Landscape: On Painting and the Subject of Nature, was published by the University of Toronto Press in 2006.

Mary Reid is Curator of Contemporary Art and Photography at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. She is the author of numerous articles, catalogues, and books, including a book about Wanda Koop, On the Edge of Experience, published in 2010 by the National Gallery of Canada and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Vincent Varga is Executive Director and CEO of the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon. Varga has played leading roles in art institutions and museums across Canada and in the United States, including the Art Gallery of Windsor, SITE Santa Fe, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Edmonton Art Gallery, and The Banff Centre.
