What Makes You You?
When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Someone who's unique -- no one else in the world looks exactly like you. Even if you're an identical twin, there'll always be some differences between the way you and your twin look.
But appearances don't come close to telling the whole story of you. How many times have you spent ages getting dressed up for Halloween, absolutely convinced that no one will be able to recognize you, and the first person you trick or treat drops some candies in your bag and calls you by name? What gave you away? Was it your voice, the way you walk, or the charming way you jiggle your eyeballs when you're excited? Probably all of these, plus lots of things you don't even realize you do that are unmistakably you and no one else.
If you have a dog, he recognizes you through his nose. And guess what? Your mom can probably do the same! She learned your unique smell shortly after you were born, and she'll never forget it. Blindfolded moms have even picked out their own child's T-shirt from a pile of dirty T-shirts just by giving them the sniff test. Think about it the next time you borrow someone's clothes without permission!
So not only is the way you look, sound, and act different from everyone else in the universe, so is the way you smell. Does this mean you shouldn't try to be like everyone else in your class? You may feel that you're going through a time in your life when it can hurt to be different. But those feelings won't last forever, and when you discover how likeable the real you is, you'll enjoy being unique. This book lets you discover what makes you so special -- in the way you look, the things you do, and the way you think and feel. It will show you some ways scientists study what makes people themselves, plus lots of stuff that isn't science but sure is fun!
