Explosive Material!'; 'Mind-Altering Substance - Use with Care'; and, most important of all, 'Do not be captured with this book in your possession.' The blazing vision of Maggie Jaffe's poems transforms America's prisons into a BOOK OF REVELATIONS for our epoch" - H. Bruce Franklin. "Riot. Lock down. The guard -- / gray gun-metal eyes and serial-killer/ smile - barks, WHO STARTED THIS?/ Twelve hands go up. TWELVE/ DAYS IN THE HOLE./ WHO DIDN'T? Fifteen hands reach for the overhead pipes./ FIFTEEN DAYS IN THE HOLE./ He beats his nightstick with a pulsing/ rhythm against his thigh, all the while/ softly moaning, I'M GETTING HARD,/ MAN, GETTING HARD." - "Ultimate Aphrodisiac."

Maggie Jaffe’s The Prisons is full of anger and full of love. By setting the world of prison and politics, prisoners and the people who love them, into this large and fiery context, Jaffe demands her readers think big, deep and with all of ourselves.

Maggie Jaffe's poems have a rare power and beauty that says something profound about the world we live in.
