(Author) Marcia Trimble is a former childhood reading specialist who began a career as a children's book writer and publisher in 1998. Inspired by her interest in photography and travel, Clicky joins her growing repertoire of characters found in THE SMILING STONE illustrated by Susan Arciero, WITCHY'S TURNED AROUND HOUSE illustrated by Chad Cameron, P. HERMIT CLAIMS A CASTLE illustrated by George Ulrich, MALINDA MARTHA AND HER SKIPPING STONES illustrated by Susi Grell, and MALINDA MARTHA MEETS MARIPOSA illustrated by John Lund.
(Illustrator) Susan Arciero is an illustrator who specializes in children's magazines and picture books. Her previous works include Nat, Nat, The Nantucket Cat, Martha's Vineyard, Cornelius Vandermouse, and The Smiling Stone. Susan credits the animals, landscapes, and intricate tapestries of Africa as her source of inspiration for her work in HELLO SUN. END
Kindergarten-Grade 2-A family trip to the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is related from the point of view of Clicky the camera. Perhaps one shouldn't expect much depth from a camera (even one with a zoom lens), but this shallow tale of a lioness and her cubs as immortalized by an anthropomorphized photo device is less than compelling. Though Arciero's borders (inspired by African animals and kanga cloth) are really quite nice, the smiling tourists, guides, lions, and other animals in Clicky's pictures are just too merry. The tiny mouse tucked into each double-page spread will provide some entertainment for children who lose track of the story line, but there are better ways to learn about Africa, lions, and cameras.
