From the Author:
Wanton's Web--the story:

Psychotherapist Cassidy McCabe is planning to marry her partner in crime-solving, reporter Zach Moran. Her life is better than it's been in a long time; her grass is mown, her debts are paid, her home-based business practice is thriving. Nonetheless, she can't rid herself of a constant, gnawing fear--if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

This fear proves prophetic when Zach receives a letter from a woman he was obsessed with more than seventeen years ago, and a son he never knew shows up on their doorstep.

Shortly afterward, the woman is murdered, and Zach becomes the chief suspect when a witness claims to have seen him entering the victim's townhouse, and surprising evidence turns up in their Oak Park, Illinois, home. Zach insists that someone is trying to frame him.

After difficult self examination, Cassidy decides that she will believe him unless she sees proof positive to the contrary. Zach launches his own investigation, and Cassidy, fearing he is too close to the case, demands that he include her.

Tension mounts between the two, with Zach resenting her interference and Cassidy concerned about the escalation in his drinking. Together they race to identify the murderer before two zealous Chicago detectives succeed in building a case against him. Along the way they uncover a burglary, a blackmail scheme, a failed kidnapping, and an execution. Finally, having identified the person behind the whole, elaborate scheme, they force a confrontation, even though it means walking into a place they have little hope of leaving alive.

About the Author:
Alex Matthews is a clinical social worker who enjoys writing psychological mysteries but has no urge to live one. She lives with her husband and private-practice partner in the Chicago area. Matthews, who considers many female investigators insufficiently female, set out to create an amateur sleuth possessing the strengths and insecurities of Everywoman.
