About the Author:

Mary Gardner Holland was born in Maine. After repeated attempts she was finally able to enlist as a nurse in 1864. She served for fourteen months in hospitals around the Washington, D.C., area. Interested in securing pensions for Civil War nurses, she collected stories from them and published her book in 1895.
