Preface

Increasing numbers of people realize that health and illness are more than biochemistry. The changes in people's health and lives as a result of energetic healing are exciting. In some cases the ease with which dramatic results can be obtained appear miraculous to the uninitiated as well as to the practitioners who use energetic medicine daily.

Energy, spirituality and healing are not intuitively obvious even though they affect us all. Familiarity with energetic healing reveals its logical basis that is fundamental to all aspects of life. Energetic phenomena have a basic common sense quality to them. Once on the trail of discovery, those seriously seeking this information soon realize there are unexpected treasures to be found. The principles that are involved in energetic healing and maintaining a healthful state also lead to spiritual fulfillment and inner peace.

As a teacher and practitioner of acupuncture and energetic healing, I'm frequently asked to explain these issues to my patients and students. While experiential classes are necessary to truly understand, there are always questions that benefit from an exploration that has been thoughtfully organized. This book is an exploration and guide for people seeking to understand the spiritual and energetic practices necessary for healing. These are the practices and principles used by the modern healer. In many cases they are practices from ancient healing arts that have evolved into a more workable and effective form.

Spiritual and energetic healing modalities are developing rapidly. An ever-increasing body of knowledge must be integrated and disseminated to the world at large. This information is bringing us to the threshold of a paradigm shift that will radically change how we approach illness and even how we think about ourselves and our bodies.

The book and questions within are organized to help with your personal and professional discovery and utilization. It is a book for the layperson, to assist in understanding alternative medicine and guide informed health care decisions. Alternative medicine practitioners will find new information on energetic modalities, including psychic healing, and their relationships to more traditional healing methods, including acupuncture. The thoughtful person will find much to ponder in the exploration of the mental processes that lead to illness.

The information in Turning Illness Into Growth is a result of personal clinical practice, the art of living, and personal insights. Much like an artist who has been influenced by the art or music of those that have come before, many have contributed to my understanding.

This book was written because I would get sick if I didn't. Not just depression but physically sick. I had aches in the joints, back, neck and head; even mysterious tooth aches and a general emotional malaise. Sometimes the discomfort was mild and at other times more serious. Some days my knees would ache so badly I could barely climb stairs. Once seated at the computer and writing, the discomfort would begin to go and the malaise was replaced with joy and enthusiasm.

At first the writing was just free association, expressing my pent up anger and frustration with a healthcare system that didn't make any sense. At the time, I didn't understand the connection between articulation and feeling good or procrastination and feeling bad. Sometimes writing stirred up an old wound and the issue's painful energy invaded the body. Resolving an issue could take weeks until the understanding was complete enough to write about it.
