About the Author:

Ann Nolan Clark (b. 1898), winner of the 1953 Newberry Award, spent her life as a writer and as an educator for the Indians of the Southwest and the Hispanics of Latin America. In the early 1920's, she began teaching Indian children. Her time teaching preschool through fourth grade in a one-room schoolhouse in Teseque Pueblo influenced her decision to work on instructional materials. Between 1940 and 1951, the Bureau of Indian Affairs published fifteen of her books, including the present volume. Her later stories and poems were based on her work in Latin America for the Institute of Inter-American Affairs. Illustrator Ma-Pe-Wi (1902-1978), also known as Velino Shije Herrera, from Zia Pueblo, began painting in 1917 as one of a group of talented young artists supported by John and Elizabeth DeHuff and Dr. Edgar Hewitt. In the 1920's, he was commissioned to paint at the Museum of New Mexico and the School of American Research. His murals can be seen in the Department of the Interior (Washington, D.C.) and the Coronado State Monument (Albuquerque, NM), where he reproduced the Kuaua kiva Murals. His highly collectible paintings can be found in numerous museum and private collections. He has illustrated seven books.
