Even after I moved here, it took a few more years before I knew this romance would last. On a late-March day in the early 1980's, it snowed overnight in the mountains and the day dawned clear blue and snowflake-clean. I caught the first chair at Eaglecrest and skied a half-dozen runs before rushing downtown to board a sailboat in order to photograph the season's opening race. As the last boat crossed the finish line, I headed back to Eaglecrest to get in a few more runs before the last chair. That evening I went out to eat, and after dinner I walked out--and into a stunning display of northern lights. I thought to myself, "only in Juneau," and from that day forward I knew Juneau was home.
In 1982, I published Juneau Portrait, a black-and-white photo book and my first publishing venture. I'm now in my 40s, the college days are long gone, and life has been good. I'm married with two sons, a house, a downtown office and two four-wheel-drive station wagons--and Juneau Portrait II is a reality. This collection of color photos shows you some of my favorites. Usually, a portrait is taken in flattering light when the subject is looking their best. This portrait of Juneau is no different. The light is flattering, the place is looking great and the sun is out. It is these stunningly sunny days that keep me addicted to Juneau and photography.
I hope you enjoy the photos in this book as much as I loved shooting them in this remarkable place.
