About the Author:
Educated at Brown University (BA, 1991) and the University of Washington (MA, 2002), Newell has devoted his working life to sustainable development of the Russian Far East. In 1996, in collaboration with Russian scientists, he co-authored The Russian Far East: Forests, Biodiversity Hotspots, and Industrial Developments. In addition to writing articles and essays for scholarly and popular publications, he frequently appears on radio and TV programs for CNN, the BBC, and other networks. Newell lives in Seattle but continues to travel widely in Northeast Asia.
