In 1942, the U.S. government evacuated 110,000 innocent and loyal Japanese Americans from their West Coast homes and interned them in American-styIe concentration camps without due process of law. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act into law, under which Congress apologized on behalf of the nation for "these fundamental violations of the basic civil liberties and constitutional rights of these individuals ofJapanese ancestry," and provided individual compensation for nearly 80,000 survivors of the wartime internment.
