About the Author:

Rosamond Napier, Lady Lawrence, was born in 1878. When she married Henry Lawrence and set sail for India, she was already a published author with several well-received novels to her credit and was probably more widely known than her husband. The Lawrences returned to Britain in 1926, three years before Gandhi’s Indian National Congress embraced total independence as its goal, but she kept up her family’s long and distinguished connection with India. In 1952, she completed the critically acclaimed biography of her famous forebear in British India, Charles Napier. Shortly before she died, at age 97, Lady Lawrence recorded cameos of her life for the popular BBC series

Lady Lawrence was better known as Rosamond Napier, a British novelist who had several popular titles to her credit before marrying and relocating to the wilds of India complete with snakes, panthers, travel by horseback, and sleeping in jungles. Her remembrances of the lives of the Indians and the British colonists during the waning days of the Raj (the book spans 1914-26) can be likened to an Indian version of Out of Africa . Though similar to such titles as E.M. Forster's The Hill of Devi , Napier presents this portrait of a time and place uniquely from a woman's point of view.
