Poetry. Translation. Translated by Carol Lettieri and Irene Marchegiani Jones. ANGELS OF YOUTH is a translation of CERES, Fontanella's ninth volume of poetry, originally published in Italian by Caramanica Editore in1996. The Italian edition garnered two distinguished poetry awards and received praise in both Europe and the United States. Devised with the English-speaking readership in mind, the current translation has subtly reorganized the original volume. "Fontanella's poetic language has a quality of disenchanted transparency, always containing a sort of suspended bitterness toward the elusive signs of our existence"--Giulio Ferroni. Like the mythical story of Demeter, "Fontanella's poetry similarly speaks of loss, but it avoids a purely elegant tone by rooting itself squarely in the plentitude of the here and now"--Rebecca J. West.
