Pedrocco's survey of Venetian art from Roman times to the beginning of the Romantic Era is one of many art histories produced by Italy's SCALA Publishers, translated into English, and sold in the U.S. at low prices. The best feature of The Art of Venice is its wealth of beautiful color reproductions of works by Bellini, Giorgione, Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese, and many others, along with color photographs of the Basilica of Saint Mark, the Ca' d'Oro, Palladian villas, and other Venetian buildings. While the plates are lush, the text is a bit trying in its assumption of much prior knowledge of Venetian political history, Christian iconography, and art history in general, and Pedrocco rushes rather precipitously from one subject to another. The sidebars, however, provide a respite and much useful information about such subjects as the Horses of St. Marks, San Sebastiano Church, and other Venetian art treasures. Victor Cassidy
