Grade 9 Up-Presenting a strongly left-wing British view, Pinchuck cheers the lifelong struggle for racial equality embarked upon by the new president of South Africa, focusing on political developments rather than on his personality. Using the black-and-white cartoon-based format found in Rius's Marx for Beginners (McKay, 1990), he attacks the apartheid system and its defenders with considerable venom, making them appear to admit crimes they would never acknowledge in public. Many of the attempts at humor are clearly British, with little appeal to American readers. In contrast, biographies by Rebecca Stefoff (Fawcett, 1990), Barry Denenberg (Scholastic, 1991), Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler (Watts, 1992), and Libby Hughes (Dillon, 1992) all provide much more detailed information on Mandela's life with considerably more detachment. Though not quite as up to date, they are much more useful for American readers.
