About the Author:

Fazlur Rahman (1919-1988) was a Pakistani philosopher and educator as well as having been a prominent liberal reformer of Islam. He received his MA in Arabic from Punjab University, Lahore in 192 and his Ph.D. in Islamic philosophy from Oxford University in 1949. He taught at many universities and finally became the Harold H. Swift Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago.

Review:

Professor Rahman reflects the Muslim world from which he came and to which he devoted a scholarly career. He is very much at home in a modern pluralist university and society where he explains his concepts to people who come with perspectives that do not mirror Islamic life.
