After seven years of exile in Ireland and the death of his wife, Phineas Finn returns London. Those in power had implied that were he again in Parliament, he would be taken into the government. So he was elected to the borough of Tankerville. Lady Laura Kennedy, in Dresden, where Phineas visited at her request had an interview with her husband when he returned to London. Mr. Kennedy, believing Phineas responsible for his wife's refusal to return to him, attempted unsuccessfully to shoot him. No report to the police but relatives took him, completely mad, back to Loughlinter, where he died. At the old Duke's death, Plantagenet Palliser succeeded to his honors. The Daubeny government fell, Mr. Gresham became Prime Minister and new Duke Lord Privy Seal. Mr. Bonteen had expected to become Chancellor of the Exchequer, disappointed when asked to take Presidency of Board of Trade. No friendship between Phineas and Mr. Bonteen, one night, after a quarrel at club, Mr. Bonteen was murdered. Suspicion first of Lizzie Eustace's husband, Reverend Emilius, since Mr. Bonteen was attempting prove his marriage to Lizzie was bigamous, but Emilius had, seemingly, a perfect alibi. The quarrel at the club, overheard by a number of members, on purely circumstantial evidence, reinforced by testimony of blundering Lord Fawn, Phineas was indicted. His friends rallied to his support but case against him very strong. New evidence of the duplicity of Emilius was found by Madame Goesler, and Phineas was acquitted. He resigned his seat, but immediately re-elected, offered his old place as Undersecretary of the Colonies. He refused, soon after he and Madame Goesler were married. The Duke of Omnium left valuable jewels and a fortune to Madame Goesler in his will. She refused and with consent of the new Duke returned the jewels and legacy to Adelaide Palliser, a cousin of the younger Duke, whose love affair with the equally impecunious Gerard Maule was thus brought to a happy conclusion.

About the Author:
Anthony Trollope (1815-82) became one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of Trollope's best-loved works revolve around the imaginary county of Barsetshire, but he also wrote penetrating novels on political, social, and gender issues and conflicts of his day.
Review:
Novel by Anthony Trollope, first published serially from July 1873 to January 1874 and in two volumes in 1874. It is a sequel to Phineas Finn and the fourth of the PALLISER NOVELS. The narrative begins after Finn's wife, Mary, has died in childbirth. He resumes his political career and again becomes romantically involved with Lady Laura Standish (now Kennedy) and Madame Marie Max Goesler, whom he eventually marries. An ethical and kind man, Finn is falsely accused of the murder of a rival politician. Eventually acquitted, he leaves political life in disgust. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature
