Ruby and Rose are twins but they are as different as night and day. Rose is their mother's golden girl and while Ruby will work, Rose will only play. One day Ruby tumbles down a well into the realm of Mother Earth. The work she does there enables things to flourish on the earth and Ruby is clothed in a golden cloth when she leaves. When Rose seeks the golden reward, her laziness means things wither and die on the earth, and Rose is showered in thistles and thorns. Sister Night & Sister Day is a lively picture book about the true colours within, told in the folktale tradition. Beth Norling is an artist who illustrates the realm of myth and mystery and brings charm to the everyday world of families, plants and animals. This picture book, Beth's fourth, is about the good and the not-so-good in all of us.

From Booklist:
Ages 4-7. Ruby and Rose are twins, but kind, hardworking Ruby is second in her mother's affections to lazy, selfish Rose. In this retelling of the Grimms' fairy tale commonly known as "Mother Hulda" or "Mother Holle," Ruby goes down a well into a pleasant land where she finds Mother Earth's house. There she works diligently for Mother Earth. When Ruby asks to return home, her goodness and hard work are rewarded with a shower of golden threads. Soon her mother sends sister Rose down the well for her own reward, but the child's indolent and uncaring ways lead to a shower of thistles and thorns. In the end, Rose indicates that she may be willing to change her ways. Though the ending is softened for this picture-book version, the basic story shines through, beautifully interpreted in the graceful text and appealing artwork. Soft strokes of conte and watercolor pencils create a series of effective illustrations featuring rounded forms and warm colors, often shades of gold. An Australian import with broad appeal.
