Dick Letts began his professional life in music as a jazz pianist, back in simpler times when self-promotion = playing well. He went on to study classical music and composition in Sydney and at the University of California at Berkeley, where he took his doctorate. He remained in the USA for many years, serving as director of the East Bay Centre for the Performing Arts in the San Francisco area and the Macphail Centre for the Arts, the University of Minnesota music school in downtown Minneapolis. In San Francisco especially, he worked with music of many styles, including classical, rock, jazz, folk and various forms of world music
