Review:
I'm interested in WW2 and when I came across this book I thought I'd buy it as it was fairly cheap. The pictures alone make this book worth the money, everyone in colour and most of them I'd never seen before. The book starts at the beginning when the jubilant German Army swept though Europe and into Russia. Then as you progress though the book you start to read and see how the tide was turning, the book then shows the Reich in decline as Hitler's armies are pushed further back into the Fatherland.If your interested in WW2 or the Third Reich I'd recommend this book. 5/5 --Stephen Mcguigan
I cannot explain it but black and white photos put up a psychological barrier for me. Color images have defined by entire life. Black and white images are from the distant historical past and do not register the same way. They are part of the material culture of my parents and grandparents generations. The fascinating aspect of "Germany at War in Color" is that the book brings Nazi Germany to life in a way that no black and white photos can ever do. Color photos remove the psychological barrier and everything looks more real to me. It is much easier to identify with the people in the images. Do not purchase "Germany at War in Color" for the text. It is superficial and not especially well written. The power of this book is in its ability to bring events from seventy years ago to life.
