The contents of this book include the story of George Edward Hobbs, who killed his own father to show him who was master of their house; John Mowbray who shot a man thinking he might be the policeman who he claimed had earlier beaten him up, and William Meffen, who killed his stepdaughter when a young man started to pay court to her. There are, too, the very famous cases, the most notorious of which must be either that of Albert Edward Burrows, who claimed the lives of 4 people in the 1920s, or the more recent case of Michael Copeland - the so-called 'Carbon Copy Killer' who killed 3 in the early 1960s. All these cases have one thing in common: the person responsible stood trial in an English court room and heard those terrible words: "You will be taken to a lawful place of execution and there hanged by the neck until you are dead." Every killer in this book spent time in the condemned cell of one of His or Her Majesty's prisons, waiting for the dread sentence to be carried out.
