This book gives a brief and selective outline of the central areas of German substantive law and introduces the reader to original German legal material. This consists of extracts from the Constitution, the Civil Code and the Criminal Code; and complete court judgments in relevant cases. This original material is presented in German with an English translation on the facing page. The cases include constitutional cases about the exclusion of certain parties in the first elections for the whole of Germany,and and the arrest of an admiral for murder allegedly committed in the war, civil cases about a blockade of a newspaper publishing house, and government liability for an air traffic controllers strike; and criminal cases about the shooting of fugitives at the Berlin Wall, and insulting soldiers. Source material is in some cases accompanied by comments or questions about comparisons which may be made with English law. The book is intended for students of German law! , but will also be of interest to comparative law students and students of legal translation.
