This 56-page guidebook covers four Cadw sites in west Wales. Although its early history is unclear, Cilgerran Castle was probably established by the Norman, Gerald of Windsor, around 1108, and it may have been the castle from which his wife, Nest — the Helen of Wales, was famously abducted in 1109. The present stone castle largely dates to the thirteenth century. St Dogmaels Abbey, a Tironian monastery, was also founded in the early twelfth century by another Norman lord, Robert fitz Martin. The guidebook details the history and development of the abbey from that time until its suppression in 1536 and beyond. Also included in the guidebook is a section describing two nearby prehistoric sites: Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber and Carreg Coetan Arthur Burial Chamber. Both are important Neolithic chambered tombs.
