Gr. 3-5. Drawn from American and European (particularly British) sources, this anthology includes 18 short stories, folktales, and chapters excerpted from novels. Selections include Beverly Cleary's "Ramona and the Three Wise Persons," Joan Aiken's "Silver Cup," and a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's "Little Fir Tree." Although a couple of the retellings lose the flavor of the original, the collection as a whole is strong and entertaining. Parents and teachers will find this a handy source of child-centered Christmas stories to read aloud. The book is available only in paperback, but the paper, binding, and cover appear to be sturdier than most. A good buy for libraries and classrooms. Carolyn Phelan
