Taylor, art critic for the London Times , has attempted to write a popular account of the relationship of the Impressionist artists to the world around them. While he shows that the artists were very selective in their representations of the subject before them, he is less successful in revealing their attitudes toward society. Often he meanders from artist to artist without drawing any conclusions; at other times his conclusions are quite unfounded. His frequently snide tone and use of colloquial Briticisms soon become annoying. There are many incorrect word choices and misspelled words. Two illustrations have swapped captions. Worst of all, the illustrations are not related to the text by number, the text discusses paintings that are not illustrated, and many paintings illustrated are not in the text. Robert L. Herbert's Impressionism: Art, Leisure, and Parisian Society ( LJ 10/15/88; an LJ "Best Book of 1988") remains the book of choice on the subject.
