Book Description Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos (illustrator). 1st. Early in WWII the German paratroop arm made some audacious attacks, particularly in the invasion of Norway and Denmark, then, when the 1940 blitzkrieg began, with the capture of the immense Belgian fortress of Eben Emael, landing there by glider, important airfields and bridges in Holland. In 1941 the paratroops and glider units faced their greatest challenge, the airborne attack on Crete, having earlier captured the Corinth Canal bridgein Greece to prevent Allied troops from escaping capture. The Crete operation was successful, but the cost was high ---- so high that the German paratroops never again mounted a major attack from the air. However, these elite and highly trained troops were used mainly as infantry in North Africa, Italy, on the Easstern Front, in France and in the last desperate defence of their homeland. They were only employed in their intended role in a number of small and specilised ops. The brief history of the Fallschirmjager is covered from conception and formation to the last days of fighting in Europe and up to the last were regarded as among the toughest and most determined opponents. In addition to the author's excellent text material the book makes lavish use of photographs, many not seen before. First edition of 2000, 176 pages including bibliography, index, b/w photos throughout. Laminated pictorial card covers VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Pictorial DJ repeats the illustrations of the hard covers which are VG, with tape repaired short tear lower front.
