When Louis Stevenson is found guilty of murder, he leaves the dock loudly proclaiming his innocence. And he delivers, too, a chilling invitation to the four men responsible for his convicition: 'You four, I summon to meet me at the time appointed, at the Assize of the Dying'. The meaning of the sinister words becomes clear immediately with two unexpected deaths. And a young couple determine to unmask the real murderer.

From AudioFile:
This is the perfect audiobook for listeners who demand both brevity and quality. Two inventive, beautifully read, classic English detective stories by one of England's best-loved writers will keep listeners intrigued. The two stories, one about a crusade to discover the murderer of an aging femme fatale and the other about the perfect crime set in a gracious country house, are suspenseful. They feature characters who are interesting and well depicted by Di Langford. Can murder ever be described as civilized? Listen to these vintage tales and decide. D.L.G. From Library Journal:
In offering two of the author's (Holiday with Violence, Audio Reviews, LJ 3/15/95) early mysteries?the title selection and a second, Aunt Helen?this audiobook introduces the tales with fittingly eerie music. The title story is by far more original and interesting: a condemned man invites the four men responsible for his conviction to stand trial with him before the judgment seat of God. Unfortunately, since the author fails to maintain the dramatic intensity realized early in the story, the plot drags painfully, limping along with repetitive dialog. The second novella, Aunt Helen, has so obvious a solution to the murder that the listener can only wait impatiently for the author to belatedly reach the same conclusion. British actress Di Langford hands in a first-rate reading (her "sobbing" lines are especially convincing), but even her polished performance cannot enliven these stilted tales. Not recommended, except for collections that cater to diehard fans of Peters.?Sister M. Anna Falbo, Villa Maria Coll. Lib., Buffalo, N.Y.
