From the Publisher:
“Today I saw my wife’s lover Cunningham walking down the street. He didn’t limp, he played with his key ring, and smiled at passers–by—and had he not been dead for seven hours at least, I could have sworn it was him.” Haiti, the Dominican Republic, corrupt police chiefs, rich farmers, other peoples’ wives—this is the world of a charismatic gringo called Cunningham. Is he a champion of women in a macho society or merely a sophisticated seducer? His English banker plans his destruction, his gardener, a voodoo priest, tries to save him. A stunning portrayal of conspiracy and revolution, murder and romance. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY hailed Mendelsohn’s The Parting Gift as “A haunting, character–driven puzzle...a seductively mysterious tale with delicious settings, memorable characters...and a perfect bittersweet resolution...The life stories revealed are as passionately romantic as the stories of the cast of Casablanca.”
