This is the story of the Jeannette Expedition to the North Pole. In 1879, the ship named Jeannette, trapped in the ice for two winters, eventually was crushed and began to sink. Her crew escaped with 8 tons of supplies and 3 boats. This title deals with the aftermath of the sinking, and what happened afterwards in the trial that followed. "The author's skillful recreation of the Jeannette's drama allows us to finally appreciate the gallant struggles of these men, who paved the way for Peary's successful quest for the Pole in 1909." "On all levels, not least as a psychological tale of Polar exploration, Icebound is a book well worth reading." The author, by the way, is definitely a renaissance historian; his earlier history was on jazz legend, Jack Teagarden.
