Synopsis

This is part of a French course, consisting of a pupil's book, a teacher's book and two cassettes, which provides preparation for GCSE Basic and Standard Grade. Although its approach is mature, being aimed at pupils aged 14 and over, it assumes virtually no previous knowledge of the language. The course is considered particularly useful for rekindling the interest of pupils who will carry on with French in Years 10 and 11 / S3 and S4, but have possibly retained little of their first three years of learning. It is also suitable for adult evening classes. Each of the 35 short, self-contained units in the pupil's book offers simple reading, speaking, listening and very simple writing activities.

This course became a huge best-seller much to the publisher's surprise to say nothing of the authors', of whom I'm one! The simple, fun format we authors devised turns out to be sufficient, with a little grammar teaching added, to take students virtually to gcse at a much lower cost than the full colour, multi-book courses available. Possibly for this reason the course was allowed to lapse, and the authors were not given the chance to update it for future editions. However the format is still valid and workable, still gives a good, clear enjoyable course in basic useful French, and could be used in other languages; it has been repeated in German ('Hilfe'), Spanish ('Socorro') and we had some enquiries about a Cornish version... It was originally planned to plug a gap in the market, for less academic students being obliged to study a foreign language in UK schools. Hence the adult but humorous tone, the strictly useful and informal vocabulary, the simple breakdown into listening, reading, speaking, writing.
