PreSchool-Grade 2-- A new version of the classic fairy tale tricked out as a rebus puzzle. It is attractively designed but seems unclear in its objectives. Similar rebuses are used to help beginning readers make the transition from interpreting or reading pictures to deciphering and decoding letters and words. However in those cases the stories are short with a very controlled vocabulary, the pictures substituted for more difficult words. This cannot be the case here for there are many difficult words in the text such as flickering, squabbled, and scolded. For an adult reading to a child, shifting between the written words and the pictures creates a stilted and tedious effort. The book may work as a lap book shared between a parent and child, but why bother when there are so many other good versions of the story to use? Rylands' illustrations are simple and pleasantly rendered in colored pencil, but for a sumptious version that brings out the drama of the story, readers should seek out Amy Ehrlich's retelling of the Perrault classic with Susan Jeffers illustrations (Dial, 1985).
