Synopsis

Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was an industrious writer and an insatiably curious traveller.
Early in 1858 he was sent by the GPO to negotiate a postal treaty in Egypt. From there he visited Palestine and returned home via Malta, Gibraltar and Spain; in the same year he travelled to the West Indies on a postal mission and in 1859 completed his first travel book, The West Indies and the Spanish Main. He accumulated material for a wide-ranging study of North America in 1861, travelling extensively in New England, the Midwest and Canada. In 1871 Trollope and his wife sailed to Australia to visit their son, returning to England in the winter of 1872. Australia and New Zealand was completed on the voyage home. Five years later he travelled throughout South Africa and produced another travel book.
