American public education is currently experiencing a turbulent and exciting period of experimentation with its basic organizational forms. One of the main objectives of this, the second volume of "Choice and Control in American Education", is to provide information about the most common forms of contemporary organizational change. Chapters provide two kinds of information: detailed descriptions of particular types of organizational change and data about effects. Chapter authors and commentators tended to be either scholars writing syntheses of available research or prominent practitioners providing insights from their own experience. From observations made by the authors and commentators, and some additional reflection, some conclusions can be reached about gaps in our knowledge and promising directions for further research.
