Far away in the Pacific Ocean, a baby sea otter is born, just a little bigger than a kitten. See her learn how to find food and look after herself. At first she floats in the water while Mom dives for food, and later she learns how to dive herself, for delicious clams and crabs, and how to sleep on a bed of sea grass in the water. By the time she is one year old she is grown-up and ready to have a baby of her own.

About the Author:
California-based wildlife photographer Suzi Eszterhas spends nine months of the year photographing a wide variety of wildlife in the field. In recent years, she has specialized in documenting family life and has become well known for her unprecedented work with newborn animals. Although Eszterhas works primarily in Africa, she has undertaken commissions and led instructional photography tours and workshops everywhere from Antarctica and the Arctic to Alaska and Montana.
From Booklist:
Experienced wildlife photographer Eszterhas’ giant full-page photos of an adorable otter pup and her mother will elicit that treasured “awww” response from charmed readers. Bringing clarity as well as plenty of fascinating details, the author uses metaphoric language to help readers imagine the newborn pup, whose fluffy, thick fur keeps her from drowning: she floats “like a cork” until learning to swim at three months. With clear narrative organization, Eszterhas captures significant aspects of a baby otter’s first year, including learning to dive and find food, joining with other otters, staying out of danger, and using tools. An appendix with more facts about otters in a bulleted list rounds out this highly readable text. The lack of an index and bibliography limits the book’s use beyond a pleasure read, but it truly is that: a pleasure to read and to see. Grades 1-3. --Patricia Austin
