From Booklist:
Mine, mine, mine. It’s many a toddler’s favorite word—and it’s how Blieka the bunny feels about her spectacular red ball (“forever and always mine”). Her friends can just forget about borrowing it. To protect it from theft, Blieka takes the bouncy plaything into the bathtub, off to see a movie (it has its own seat), and to the park (where it occupies one end of the seesaw). When the beloved ball gets punctured and deflates, her friends come to the rescue with a pump, and as a result, Blieka decides to give sharing a whirl. What’s particularly good here is how debut author and illustrator Moores captures Blieka’s struggles with actually letting go of the ball, even though she’s decided that she wants to. A series of expressive spot illustrations demonstrate how each handoff gets progressively easier. The pencil-and-wash artwork, which has a lovely speckled quality, captures a toddler rabbit engaged in imaginative play and struggling with emotions that will be familiar to her human counterparts. A nice antidote to those “mine!” declarations. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Ann Kelley
From School Library Journal:
PreS-Blieka is unwilling to share a new red ball until it deflates and friends revive it with a pump. The bunny has a change of heart after this act of kindness and is rewarded by reciprocal sharing of toys by all the other animals. The text is tightly written, and the plot deals with a typical childhood experience in an age-appropriate way. The lesson, which incorporates a bit of the Golden Rule, is delivered without a heavy hand, and there are some mildly humorous scenes when Blieka totes the ball to various places, including to the park, to the movies, and to circus school. The illustrations, which are rendered in pencil and wash, complement the text, but the many different kinds of animals are barely distinguishable from one another. An additional purchase.-Maralita L.
