About the Author:

Jane Scott is a member of the Centre for Child and Family Research, UK and an academic engaged with the development of the Integrated Children's System - a programme designed to help child welfare agencies assess need, plan interventions and monitor outcomes for vulnerable children. Harriet Ward is Director of the Centre for Child and Family Research and Professor of Child and Family Research at Loughborough University, UK. She has undertaken extensive research in the field of assessing need and evaluating outcomes in children's services. She is co-editor of Approaches to Needs Assessment in Children's Services, also published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.

The first three chapters provide excellent overviews and summaries of the evidence of need, the impact of poverty and social exclusion on children themselves, on families and communities and the range of policies and the impact of these on children's well-being in the UK and the US. The book presents a (deservedly) mixed picture of the current developments in children's services in the UK. I would recommend it to those who need a general overview of recent developments in child well-being and children's services, including social work students, researchers and practitioners and managers in the field. I found it to be ambitious, timely and stimulating... There is something for everyone involved in family support.
