Originally published as a classified Battle Summary, Dark Seas is a unique record written by naval officers during World War II, and soon after 1945. Stamped 'restricted' and subject to the Official Secrets Act these texts, maps, plans, first-hand accounts that include sighting reports, messages between Italian and German Naval staffs were held at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, South West England. The most decisive engagement between surface ships in the Mediterranean during World War II was undoubtedly the Battle of Cape Matapan (27 29 March, 1941). The Battle Summary is a full account and draws on the action from both sides. This gives Dark Seas detailed and thoughtful insight into one of the last fleet engagements in naval history and contains a previously unpublished unique first-hand account of the battle by HRH Prince Philip, who served in the action. Jane Harrold's introduction sets the scene and explains the significance of the historical document and of the battle itself.
