Driven by poverty and without any education, he left for his father in South Africa, who had been working there for nine years as a tailor. Through diligent study, the nine-year-old boy was not only able to overcome the language barrier, but also excelled at school. His fervent passion for reading books propelled him up the ranks, up to grade 8 of primary school. A lack of money forced him to drop out of school, and around the age of sixteen he took up the first of his many retail jobs.
